Hi.

Welcome, friends! This here slice of the Internet revolves around lattes, bookshelves, Pinterest, Emily Henderson, white wine spritzers, China, brass anything, passports and my sweet family. Grammar and important worldly events? Not so much. Consider yourself warned.

Mus...ACCKKKK, HELP!

Mus...ACCKKKK, HELP!

I love when your friends can sense what you need at just the exact right moment. Maybe they surprise you with latte or give you a shout out on facebook to remind you that you are loved and missed.  Maybe they simply send you a hilarious text message that makes you snort water out of your nose. Friends are awesome like that. They just know.

Take my friend Catie, for instance. A while back she read this blog post of mine. The next day I got an email saying that she had gifted me an Etsy gift card so I could purchase some art for my baby’s nursery. What? So freaking thoughtful, no? She knew just what would make me smile!

This is what I bought! It is not Frart. It is the cutest!

This is what I bought! It is not Frart. It is the cutest!

And then take my friend Jill. I’m not sure how she knew because I did not advertise it, but out of the blue she sent me an email saying something like, ” Hey Ditty…I thought you would love these songs.” And then she listed a few songs that, she was right, I do now love! Thanks Jill! You rock!

How did she know that I had just been sitting there thinking about how I NEEDED new music in my life? Freaky.

When it comes to music (and politics and fashion and fad-diets and frankly most everything), I am incredibly out of the loop. I have the tendency to blame my out-of-the-loopness on living in China. This may not be fair. It is possible (likely?) that I would be out of the loop if I lived in the heart of New York City and was married to a music producer. But for the sake of this argument (and my self-esteem) lets blame China, can we?

You see, fun music-y apps like Spotify or Pandora don’t really work here. If you want to discover new music you either have to be proactive and do some research or you have to just ooze coolness.  Newsflash: I am neither proactive nor (or? English teachers and grammar freaks…help me out) cool. Therefore, I am generally out of touch. I listen to Adele’s ‘Someone like You’ like it was released 2 weeks ago (wasn’t it?).

Seriously...just let me know.

Seriously...just let me know.

So while I was listening to my new-to-me songs, I got all inspired to get serious about acquiring more new music. I truly feel like I NEED it. Like fish need water. Like a 2 year-old needs a nap. Like Daenerys Targaryen needs dragons (BTW: Did you watch the Season 4 premier? Was it amazing? Don’t tell me what happens. I have to wait 6 more months until I can get the whole season at once so that I don’t have the agony of waiting a whole week between episodes. I know, I know…I’m waiting either way. Don’t over think it. It is not logical).

I don’t want to get all hippy-dippy on you but there is just something so powerful about music. The right song can lift you up out of a bad mood or give you the permission you need to cry it out. I love how some songs meet you right where you are currently at, while others bring you instantly back in time. I love that, despite the fact that every Nelly song sounds exactly the same, there are actually an infinite number of melodies, rhythms and lyrics that can be created. I even love that the same song can be absolutely adored by one person and totally loathed by another.

While I was digging around for some songs to add to my new springtime playlist I found a couple songs that I L-O-V-E and thought, “Hey it might be kinda fun to write a post about music and introduce people to some new tunes”.

Turns out my plan had one major flaw. Upon further investigation, I realized that none of my newly discovered songs are actually “new” at all…just new to me. You all have heard them no fewer than 300 times on the radio…guaranteed.

But all was not lost because then I had an even more brilliant idea. Instead of me inspiring you with newly discovered tunes, you could inspire me! I know, I know…I am super thoughtful when it comes to myself.

Is there a song that you have been rockin’ on loop lately? A song that just seems to hit that sweet spot? Maybe gives you goose bumps? You know… the one that you turn all the way up in the car and sing to at the top of your lungs with wild abandon. Oh, you know the one. Don’t deny it.

We all have THAT song…but do you have the COURAGE to share it with the world….errrrr…20 or so people who actually read this blog? Yeah…that was a dare.

If you are L-O-V-E-ing a song right now, will you please share it with me in the comments section of this post? Consider it your charity, good deed, random act of kindness for the day.  I need new music ideas…I’m a mom. I live in China. I rarely leave the house, unless it is to make an emergency run to get ice cream. I’m desperate! Plus, who knows, you might even have fun playing along!

Here are the rules:

  1. No judging

Ready to play?

I’ll start us off, since it was my idea and that only seems fair. Feel free to be less (or more) detailed when (not if) you post yours. Here are mine:

1. Wildfire

john-mayer-1376403903

Why I love it: It’s cheerful and reminds me of what it is like to feel yourself really start to like someone

Favorite Lyric: “Because a little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”. If that ain’t the darn truth, I just do not know what is.

2. Team

lorde-pure-heroine-universal

Why I love it: Her voice, obviously. I also like how it is a little haunting but also upbeat…an interesting mix.

Favorite Lyric: “I’m kinda over getting told to throw my hands up in the air. So there.”  Me too girl…me too! I’m too old for that, ya know what I’m sayin’?

3. Wrecking Ball

miley-cyrus-bangerz-album-art

miley-cyrus-bangerz-album-art

Why I love it: I know it is not new and the video is straight-up creepy, but just admit it, it’s catchy.  I also know it is not cool for a 37 year old woman to like Miley Cyrus. I’m trying not to be ashamed. It’s just that I can’t get this darn song out of head, so it has to make the list. I like the emotion. It reminds me of young, stupid, obsessive, destructive love and the total devastation that comes along with it.

Favorite Lyric: the part where she goes “you wre-e-e-cked me”. I sing that REAL loud in the car!

4. Girls Chase Boys

Ingrid-Michaelson-Lights-Out-Album

Ingrid-Michaelson-Lights-Out-Album

Why I love it: It is a practical, rational, happy breakup song. The world needs more of these.

Favorite Lyric: “Don’t call me, I won’t call you. Lets just call it over” Geez. How much time could I have saved had I just taken THAT advice?

5. Hang With Me

18899

18899

Why I love it: Also not new, or even new to me, but Robyn is THE BEST and I feel like I am doing my part in world if even one person discovers her amazingness as a result of reading this post.

Favorite Lyric: “If you do me right, I’ll do right by you. And if you keep it tight, I ‘m gonna confide in you.” Amen, sister!

I realize all my choices are a bit pop-y and severely slanted in the female artist direction….and that might not be your thing. It is not always my thing but…I guess right now it is. Feel free to broaden my horizons and lift me out of the mainstream music scene. Seriously, I’m begging you! Do the right thing!
